Maul Shadow Lord takes place a year after we last saw him in the clone wars and shows us how he is dealing with events that saw the end of the shadow collective.
This feels like every Star Wars fans’ dream of a show and it definitely did not miss. Every action moment had you on the edge of the seat and the characters were very interesting.
The Animation in the show was also incredibly stunning. Don’t get me wrong, the animation in the Clone Wars is mostly brilliant but the usage of painting over the animated panels to give the planet of Janix more life and the characters more emotion was something that added so much more than just to be aesthetically pleasing. It added depth.
Need I talk about the sound design? The fact that they managed to embed Sam Witwer’s screams into the sound of Maul’s lightsaber is genuinely such an insane detail and it makes each swing so much more impactful. I think it has become one of my favourite sound design choices within the Star Wars medias.
The voice actors in this delivered such a perfect job too. Sam Witwer did such a great job (as per usual) but I think the standout for me was Gideon Adlon who voiced Devon Izara. The conflict she portrays throughout the show through her voice is outstanding and, when we get to the end of the show, it gets 1000x times better. I genuinely felt fear at one point.
Finally, Maul Shadow Lord fixed one of the biggest issues I have with Star Wars at the moment and that is the Inquisitors. They are meant to be this group of Force Wielder hunters that should be feared whenever we see them. Shows like Rebels and Kenobi made them into a joke sometimes. But in this? Outstanding. I felt fear every time we saw both Marrok and Crow on the screen which is exactly what we should have every time.
Maul Shadow Lord is perfect for the clone wars and Maul fans. Not only that, if you want a very good Star Wars story featuring one of the coolest characters in the galaxy, definitely do not give this a miss.
