Where do I even start with a film like this? One of my most anticipated films of the year, I was genuinely worried it wouldn’t live up to my expectations. Instead, it exceeded them and turned out to be a perfect film from start to finish, as well as the funniest cinema experience I’ve personally ever had.

The Invite is an incredible piece of filmmaking that showcases Olivia Wilde’s impressive directing skills and Seth Rogen’s brilliant comedic performance. From the very beginning, I knew I was in for something special. The opening credits feature a brilliantly edited sequence showing the characters getting ready or in some cases, not getting ready for the night ahead.

Straight away, we’re introduced to the strain within the relationships, the frustrations between the characters, their lives, and even their neighbours. These intricately crafted sequences provide just enough detail to draw us into this well-written story. As the night progresses, the chaos unfolds, and the comedy is absolutely hilarious. There were moments when my partner had to ask me to be quiet because I was laughing so loudly.

However, beneath all the comedy lies a deeper and darker undertone. As the story develops, the emotional weight of the relationships comes to the forefront, leading to a fantastic ending that cleverly calls back to the film’s opening. It’s an understandable and genuinely emotional sequence that elevates the film and makes it stand out as something truly special.

Not many films come close to achieving what The Invite does. Despite being set largely in a single location and relying heavily on dialogue, it remains consistently engaging thanks to its excellent choreography, sharp writing, and strong visual direction. Being able to experience it on the big screen made it even more memorable.

The Invite is filled with constant anxiety, shocking revelations, relevant conversations, and laugh out loud comedy and that’s exactly why it’s a perfect film.
