Digger

Tom Cruise is immense with nearly every sequence he was just irresistibly charismatic and egoistical to watch. The transformation into Digger just changes everything you would expect from the man. Not only does the make-up and prosthetics help ensure Cruise is outgoing, but the supporting cast, John Goodman in particular, are totally off their rocker in this over-acted descend into political satire.

At times the satire itself struggles to balance the tone and the message it wants to spotlight, even going as far to take a centrist approach filled with ambiguous rhetoric until the absolute harrowing yet effective conclusion.

From some shots shown in the marketing I thought I would be put off, they stood out to be quite jarring. But I will say I was surprised and impressed with the final product. It just immersed me so deeply in this bizarre and surreal environment that Alejandro G. Iñárritu has crafted, and to no surprise with his previous gigs, Emmanuel Lubezki’s insanely talented eye with the camera.

It’ll be divisive no doubt, but the impact Digger will have on our culture and film generation will inevitably stand the test of time.
