Scary Movie Review

25 years after their last appearance, the Wayan Brothers are back with the rebootquel for Scary Movie. And you have to hand it to them, in the last quarter of a century, they haven’t wavered their style at all. If anything, diving deeper and almost trying to offend for the sake of it at times, which you could feel the majority of the screening feeling quite uncomfortable. The film relies heavily on nostalgia and at times is a fun watch but spends the most part trying too hard. I must admit though, I had a good time, as a fan of late 90’s/ early 2000’s comedies, this was a nice change from the safe comedies we’ve had in the last 10 years.

For someone who is a huge fan of the Wayans brothers and has waited most of my life for them to return to the Scary Movie franchise and the big screen, my anticipation for this film was extremely high. While it lived up to those expectations in many ways, it relied a little too heavily on nostalgia. From the opening scene, I loved many of the cameos and jokes. However, the more I watched, the more it felt like a rehash of the first film. I was hoping for more of an expansion of the franchise rather than what felt like a soft reboot. Even though the film is self aware of its reboot like approach, it still fell short of my expectations in that regard. I was surprised by just how outrageous this entry was, arguably making it the most over the top film in the franchise. It tackled topics and issues I genuinely wasn’t expecting, and I’m glad it didn’t pull any punches. The film takes aim at everyone and everything, and that’s the kind of fearless comedy I’ve been missing. That said, I do think some characters didn’t receive the screen time they deserved. Shorty and Ray, in particular, felt underused. Ray was at his best whenever he was on screen, but both characters seemed sidelined in favour of some of the newer additions. When the film referenced horror movies, it was genuinely laugh out loud funny. Although this isn’t my favourite Scary Movie film, and I’m not sure how much rewatch value it has, it was great to experience a cinema full of people laughing and gasping throughout. In many ways, it’s exactly the kind of comedy audiences need right now.

Thirteen years after Scary Movie 5 and with the return of the Wayans brothers, I genuinely thought we were about to get a return to form for the franchise.

And thats what we get, Is that it?

I’ll say it without pulling any punches: this movie was terrible.

I have a pretty dark sense of humour, and I was expecting this film to be far more outrageous than it was. Like i was expecting way more fucked up and offensive jokes Halfway through, I genuinely started wondering whether I’d become more sensitive over the years. Then I realised the problem wasn’t me,it was the jokes. I was offended but not because im woke because it was tame The trailer sold a completely different movie, one that looked willing to push boundaries and take risks. Instead, the humour feels safe, awkward, and surprisingly bland.

I’m not even a huge spoof movie guy to begin with, but the biggest issue is that I was bored. A lot of the comedy feels like it’s desperately trying to recreate what worked in the early 2000s rather than finding a fresh angle of its own.

I’m not expecting a masterpiece, and I’m certainly not expecting a thought provoking plot. It’s a Scary Movie film. What I am expecting is to laugh more than three times across the entire runtime.

After over a decade away and with the Wayans brothers back, this should have felt like an event. Instead, it feels like a franchise chasing its past rather than reminding us why we loved it in the first place.

I stopped doing double bills in the cinema today i went against that and realised why i stopped it
