Soulm8te feels like a straight to streaming version of M3GAN, except somehow with a higher age rating and far less to actually show for it. Considering the film has more freedom when it comes to violence, the gore and kills are honestly embarrassing, especially when compared to what M3GAN managed to do with much more personality and creativity.
The performances are poor across the board, and the story never gives you much reason to care about any of the characters. It constantly feels like the film is trying to imitate what made M3GAN work, but without understanding why that film was so entertaining in the first place.
There are also attempts to give the story some heart and emotion, particularly with the relationship at the centre of the film, but instead of being touching it mostly comes across as uncomfortable and creepy. The emotional moments simply do not land.
Overall, Soulm8te is a dull, awkward and surprisingly tame film that wastes its higher age rating, delivers terrible performances and never comes close to matching the fun or charm of M3GAN.
