There’s a technically astonishing sequence that was mind blowing to witness, clashing together all the cinematic elements into this long take. Completely taking your soul into a forbidden world of unimaginable possibilities, altering you into a slasher obsessed fanatic that’s desperate to tear it all down.
On the surface, the story stumbles as it leans upon the more surreal aspects, much like Jane Schoenbrun’s previous work. Yet it’s overcome by Schoenbrun’s remarkable vision. Their striking imagery and critical commentary on the slasher genre paves the way for constantly engaging and captivating discussions.
Gillian Anderson completely immerses herself into the role of Billy embodying multiple perspectives all jammed into one to reinforce Schoenbrun’s message. She devours every line, exposing the pain and exploitation that lurked behind the actors in 1980s slashers, while guding Kris, Hannah Einbinder’s character, towards newfound freedom.
The more I sit on Camp Miasma, the more intrigued I become to dive back into it. To explore the wealth of the meta analysis and thematic depth beneath it. As a fan of horror, and slashers in particular, there’s so much here to invest in, and perhaps even discover something about yourself along the way, just as Kris does.
