This comedy is surprisingly funny and a genuinely enjoyable watch.
I watched *The *Dink a couple of weeks ago, and going into it, I wasn’t expecting much more than a mediocre straight to streaming comedy. However, it’s produced by none other than Ben Stiller, and Jake Johnson with him also starring and it ended up being a pleasant surprise.
The film follows Dusty Boyd (aka “The Hammer”), a former tennis prodigy whose career was cut short by a serious injury. When he’s called upon to help his father save their country club from yet another pickleball court being added, he suffers another injury while trying to defend it. To recover more quickly, he’s forced to do the one thing he never wanted to play, the dreaded sport of pickleball.
Once Dusty starts playing pickleball with a group of older women, the film really finds its footing. That’s where it got the biggest laughs out of me. Ben Stiller also has a small but hilarious role, repeatedly trying to convince Jake Johnson’s character to join a sex website StickyHoney.com, which was easily one of the funniest running jokes in the movie.
While this isn’t a perfect film or even a great one I really miss these kinds of lighthearted, silly comedies. It reminded me of the early 2000s, when movies like this were much more common, and I found myself feeling nostalgic for that era.
Overall, it’s a quick, enjoyable watch with plenty of laughs. It’s the kind of movie you can throw on, have a good time with, and leave with a smile. I genuinely hope more people give this one a chance because I had a lot of fun with it.
