The Last House starts off feeling very COVID coded, with its isolated setting and atmosphere immediately giving the film an interesting sense of mystery. For a while, I was genuinely intrigued by where the story was going and thought it had the potential to become something really effective.

Unfortunately, after the time jump, the film completely loses what made the opening interesting. From that point onwards everything becomes massively predictable, with character decisions becoming increasingly stupid and frustrating to watch. You can see most of the twists and developments coming long before they happen, which takes away almost all of the tension the film had built up.

The cast is surprisingly stacked and there are some talented names involved, but even they cannot save the film from its increasingly ridiculous story. By the final act, my frustration had completely taken over any interest I had in what was happening.

And then there is the ending, which genuinely might be one of the worst film endings I have ever seen. After everything the film builds towards, the conclusion is incredibly unsatisfying and somehow makes the entire experience even more frustrating.

Overall, The Last House begins as an intriguing and atmospheric film but quickly turns into a predictable and infuriating mess. A strong cast and promising opening simply aren’t enough to save it.
