Considering every blast of spectacular superhero energy the first season of this revitalised cartoon show gave us, there is a slither of despair and disappointment when it came to everything this season has delivered.
Is it an structural issue or one with the writer’s room? There was not enough time and space for these X-Men characters to properly develop and breathe through this accelerant air of possibilities when it came to facing one of their most formidable foes, Apocalypse. To make us completely terrified of Bastion in the first season, a character that most of us knew nothing about and everyone else knew the little details of his character. To then present us Apocalypse in a way that seems a whole lot more fragile and tame compared, it is just a shame. Add on the time it has taken in-between seasons to be produced, what a mess.
But I will say there are some glimmers of entertaining deliverance throughout, mostly the opening three episodes, and that sufficed enough to keep me engaged and intrigued to see how the plot unravels.
With the X-Men soon approaching again within the live-action format and another season on the horizon, I’m holding out hope this is just a blip that our minds will forget with the help of Professor X’s telepathy or shielded by Wolverine’s adamantium. I am hopeful for the future of these mutants.
